Snoring is a common condition that affects both men and women as they sleep. Men are more frequent snorers than women. As a person ages, they tend to snore more frequently and their snores are often louder. While occasional snoring is not a big problem, regular snoring can be disruptive to sleep patterns and assistance may be needed to help a person get a good night’s sleep. There are some causes of snoring so a person can find out why they are snoring when they sleep.

 

Symptoms of Snoring

A person may have a snoring problem if they experience the following symptoms. If a person is witnessed to stop breathing for a short time during their sleep it can be a sign that they snore. If they have a restless sleep they may be snoring. If a person wakes up with a headache, sore throat, or if they suffer from high blood pressure they are likely to be snoring at night. Snoring can disrupt their sleep and can disrupt the sleep of their partner as well. Children that snore often have a poor attention span, may feel tired during the day and may have trouble with the concentration in school.

 

Obstructed Airways

When the nasal passage becomes obstructed this can cause a person to snore. Some people may only snore during certain seasons. Some people may snore if they have seasonal allergies or if they have a sinus infection. At this time the nasal passage is block and a person cannot breathe as normal. This can lead to snoring while they sleep. The nasal passage may be blocked if a person has a deviated septum. The septum is the wall that is able to separate one side of the nostril from the other. If the septum is too large or abnormal shaped, it can cause a person to snore. If a person has a nasal polypus this can also lead to the obstruction of the airway and lead to snoring.

 

Poor Muscle Tone

If a person has poor muscle tone in their throat or in their tongue this can lead to snoring. If the throat and the tongue muscles become overly relaxed while a person is sleeping they will collapse. The muscle will then fall back and they will block the airways. This is more likely to happen when a person is in a deep sleep. If a person drinks alcohol or uses sleeping pills this can also cause the muscles to become overly relaxed and collapse. As a person ages, this may happen naturally and the muscles will collapse on their own. Since the airways a block, snoring will occur when a person breathes in their sleep.

 

Bulky Tissue in the Throat

People that are overweight often have bulky tissue in their throats. Bulky throat tissue can also be caused by tonsils that are large and larger adenoids. This can vibrate as a person sleeps and lead to snoring.

 

Soft Palate and Uvula

If a person has a palate that is long and soft or if their uvula is lone this can reduce the size of the opening between the throat and the nose. The uvula is the tissue that appears to hang in the back of the mouth. When a person snores these areas will vibrate and will bump into each other. This will lead to an obstruction in the back of the throat and will cause a person to snore.

 

Alcohol

There are some things that can lead to snoring beside the makeup of the mouth or nose. A person that consumes too much alcohol before going to be bed will often snore at night. Alcohol can relax the muscles in the throat. It will also lower the body’s natural ability to keep the airways open while sleeping. If a person is a heavy drinker they often have an issue with snoring at night.

 

Not Sleeping Enough

If a person is not getting enough sleep and they suffer from sleep deprivation they can snore. If a person is very tired and they are not sleeping or getting only three to four hours of sleep a night, the body will become overtired. When a person is finally able to get some sleep this can cause the entire body to relax including the muscles in the throat. When a person sleeps this will often snore.

 

Sleeping Position

There are certain positions that can increase snoring. People that sleep on their backs often snore louder than people that sleep on their stomachs or their sides. When a person is laying on their back the gravity will go into effect and will cause the muscles in the throat to fall. This will cause the airways to become narrow.

 

Risks and Dangers

There are some risk factors that will contribute to the likelihood of a person snoring when they sleep. Men are more likely to snore than women are. Men are also more likely to suffer from sleep apnea. If a person is overweight they are also more likely to be snorers. People with a family history of snoring are also more likely to snore themselves.

Snoring can lead to an interruption in breathing. This can range from a couple of seconds to a minute. The airway may be blocked making it hard to get oxygen into the body. Snoring can lead to sleep apnea which can lead to high blood pressure and will put a person at an increased risk for a heart attack. People that snore often do not get a good night’s sleep and are tired during the day.

Snoring is more than just annoying. There are some health risks that come along with snoring.

These are some common causes of snoring. Snoring can disrupt the sleep of both the snorer and anyone that is sleeping near them.
